Types of Paint: Guide to House Painting
If you're looking for an economical, quick and relatively-hassle free way to spruce up your home, paint is a fantastic option. Tins of paint are usually inexpensive and painting requires less work to apply than wallpaper. However, before diving in with your brush, it's important to know the basics of the different types of paint available on the market, as there is a large range to choose from.
You will find that there is a tin of paint to suit everyone’s needs; whether it is an indoor wall or an outdoor infrastructure, your property will be covered for years to come, assuming you have picked the right kind. Here is some more information on each type, and what kind of job it is suitable for.
Primer
Applying a primer to your project should be the first step of the painting process. It's an uncoloured paint that stops old hues from showing through onto your new layer, helping to prepare your wall for the new paint to adhere to properly. You should be left with a smooth, seamless finish, which may not be the case if you skip this crucial step.
Using a primer will also save you the stress of having to apply multiple layers of new paint in order to get the finish you're hoping for.
Water-based
If you dislike the harsh smell of oil-based paint and are concerned about the chemicals they're made of, then water-based paints serve as a better option for the inside of your home. They have rapid drying times but are often more costly than oil-based alternatives for this reason.
Since they are diluted with water, you will want to invest in a more expensive brand as water content might increase with lower-priced products, meaning the paint will be less likely to adhere to your wall and you'll need to apply more coats.
Oil-based
Long-lasting, oil-based paint is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use in your home. It's also better for surfaces that are prone to stains and rust, as a coat of this is extremely durable and blocks any discolouring. Oil-based paint does, however, take a long time to dry, but the finish is well worth it.
